Debris projects only. We refer construction, remodel, roofing and cleanout debris roll-offs, not recurring garbage service. Inside Abilene city limits the City handles regular trash, with short-term construction debris as its stated exception.

Debris roll-offs for Merkel projects

Merkel sits off Interstate 20 roughly seventeen miles west of Abilene, in northwestern Taylor County, according to the Texas State Historical Association. That distance shapes a dumpster order more than most people expect. Delivery and haul-off are part of what a pro charges, and a truck coming from the Abilene side has a longer run to Merkel than to a street inside Abilene. Tell the pro you are in Merkel when you send the form, along with your street or ZIP, so the quote reflects the real trip.

What we could and could not confirm about Merkel's rules

The City of Merkel website lists City Hall at 100 Kent Street and a phone number of (325) 928-4911, and says permit questions go through City Hall. Its Code Enforcement and Building Inspection page describes a mission of protecting the “health, safety, security and appearance of our community” through adopted ordinances and codes, links a Code Enforcement fee schedule and an online complaint form, and says printed copies of ordinances are available at City Hall. The city's ordinance page points to a full online code. What we could not do is read the text of that code, so we cannot tell you whether Merkel requires a permit to set a roll-off on private property or on a street, or whether the city contracts with a single garbage hauler. We are not claiming either way. A pro who takes your request will confirm it, and a call to City Hall settles it in a minute.

Is the project inside Merkel city limits?

City limits matter here for the same reason they matter in Abilene. In August 2026 the Merkel city ordinances page listed a new ordinance titled “Annexation portion of FM 126” (City of Merkel ordinances). We have not read it, but the title is a good reminder that the boundary can move, so a property just outside town may now be inside, or the reverse of what an old map suggests. If your address is near the edge, ask City Hall which side you are on before you plan the container location.

The City of Abilene's trash rule is a separate matter. Abilene says it is the only authorized collector inside Abilene city limits (City of Abilene Solid Waste), and Merkel is a separate incorporated city. Merkel does buy its water from Abilene, and the city website reports roughly 77.7 million gallons purchased in 2025, but that is a utility contract and says nothing about trash.

Burn bans and the temptation to burn it

Out in the country around Merkel, brush piles and old lumber are sometimes burned. The city site posts burn ban orders, with one dated August 11, 2026 listed at the time we looked (City of Merkel), and links the county burn ban map. Treated lumber, shingles and demolition debris are poor candidates for a burn pile in any case. A roll-off keeps that debris contained and moving to a landfill instead. Check the current ban status on the city site rather than relying on our snapshot.

Who uses a roll-off in Merkel

The Handbook of Texas entry says the economy rests on farming and ranching, with oil production and military-support jobs at Dyess Air Force Base. Farm and ranch property often has outbuildings, fence lines and older houses, any of which can generate a cleanout or tear-out; that is our general observation, not a Merkel statistic. Merkel’s own history page notes the 1904 Opera House built of native mountain stone and a downtown shaped by the railroad (Our History), so older buildings in the center of town are part of the picture. Remodeling an old commercial or residential building can mean plaster, old roofing layers and other material that needs sorting, so describe the building age to your pro.

The City drop-off in Abilene does not help Merkel residents

Abilene’s Citizens Convenience Station requires a driver’s license and a current City of Abilene Municipal Services Statement and is for residents, so a Merkel address will not qualify, and it refuses shingles, concrete, brick, tile and sheetrock in any case. For a Merkel project that produces construction material, a container delivered to the site is the practical route.
