Abilene Dumpster Rental FAQ
Real questions about debris roll-offs in Abilene, answered from City of Abilene and state sources.
Debris projects only. We refer construction, remodel, roofing and cleanout debris roll-offs, not recurring garbage service. Inside Abilene city limits the City handles regular trash, with short-term construction debris as its stated exception.
Does the City of Abilene allow private dumpster companies?
The City says its Solid Waste Services Division is the only trash collection agency authorized to collect solid waste within city limits, citing Texas Health and Safety Code 364.034 and City Ordinance Section 27-11, and that short-term construction debris is the only exception (City Solid Waste page). The City also offers its own 20, 30 and 40 yard roll-offs. We could not find a published franchise or permit application for private roll-off haulers. That is why we refer debris projects only.
Do I need a permit to put a dumpster on the street?
We found no published City of Abilene rule specific to roll-off containers in the street or right-of-way. One vendor guide says to check with the City. The simplest route is your own driveway or lot. If you need the street, an alley or a sidewalk, contact Public Works (see the contacts below) before delivery.
Do I need a permit for the work itself?
Often yes. The City's building permit FAQ says a permit is required for demolition, alteration, construction, enlargement or repair of a building, and for re-roofing a house if you are replacing more than 5 squares. The permit is a separate matter from the dumpster, but its date affects when you need the container.
What can I put in a roll-off dumpster?
Typically construction, remodel, roofing and demolition debris and cleanout material. Hazardous materials such as batteries, tires, railroad ties and corrosive chemicals are commonly prohibited, and the City's commercial container guidance says not to put liquids in a container. Your pro sets the exact list.
Can I take construction debris to the City's drop-off station?
No. The Citizens Convenience Station at 2149 Sandy Street lists bricks, concrete, rock, sheetrock, shingles and tile as prohibited, and it does not accept commercial, multi-family or government-site loads. It is for residents only and limits each visit to about one pickup-bed load.
Can I use my curbside trash cart for renovation debris?
No. The City says residential carts must not be filled with cement blocks or construction debris, and that hired contractors such as roofers cannot use a home's residential curbside containers (City Solid Waste page).
Where does the debris go?
The Abilene area is served by two privately operated landfills on FM 3034 north of town: the Regional Landfill (Republic Services) and Abilene Environmental Landfill. The City's landfill page says to contact them for pricing, hours and materials accepted.
Is asbestos a concern on demolition jobs?
It can be. The Texas Department of State Health Services says notification is required before demolishing a building even when no asbestos is present, with at least 10 working days of notice, and that one private residence is not subject to the asbestos NESHAP rules (DSHS asbestos page). For commercial buildings the City requires an asbestos survey before a renovation or demolition permit is issued (City FAQ). Those duties belong to the property owner and contractor.
What does the City charge for its own roll-offs?
The City's fee schedule lists non-scheduled open-top rates of $315 for 20 yard, $388.50 for 30 yard and $462 for 40 yard per collection, sales tax extra. See the cost page for the details and what we could not confirm.
What size dumpster do I need?
It depends on the material and its weight. Smaller 10 and 15 yard containers suit single-room jobs, and 20 to 40 yard containers suit roofing, large remodels and demolition. Heavy debris like shingles and concrete can hit a weight limit before the container is full. The size guide has more.
Do you provide regular trash service?
No. We refer debris roll-offs for construction, remodel, roofing and cleanout projects. Trash collection inside city limits is by the City.
Who do I contact about illegal dumping?
The City lists (325) 676-3867 for illegal dumping reports.
Are you a dumpster company?
No. We are an independent referral service, not a contractor. We connect you with local, independent dumpster rental pros, who are responsible for their own licensing, permits and insurance. When you submit the form, your info is shared with a local independent pro who will contact you.
